What Are Vapor Barrier Bags?
Vapor barrier bags are flexible packaging constructed from two or more bonded layers, each serving a distinct protective function. In a typical foil-laminate construction:
- Outer layer (polyester or nylon film): Provides puncture resistance, structural rigidity, and a printable surface for labels.
- Middle barrier layer (aluminum foil or metallized film): This is the defining element. Solid aluminum foil achieves near-zero moisture vapor transmission; metallized film provides good barrier performance at lower cost and weight but is not equivalent to solid foil for critical applications.
- Inner layer (polyethylene or polypropylene): Provides the heat-sealable surface and forms the food or product contact layer. For military and industrial applications, this layer must be compatible with the desiccants and other materials placed inside the bag.
Once heat sealed, a vapor barrier bag creates a controlled internal atmosphere that remains stable for weeks, months, or years depending on the laminate's MVTR rating and the presence of desiccants inside.

MVTR and WVTR Explained: The Metric That Matters
MVTR (moisture vapor transmission rate), also called WVTR (water vapor transmission rate), measures how much water vapor passes through a packaging material per square meter over a 24-hour period, expressed in grams. A lower MVTR means a better moisture barrier.
To put the numbers in context:
- Standard LDPE poly bag: MVTR typically exceeds 5 g/m2/24h. At this level, moisture passes through relatively freely. A poly bag provides no meaningful vapor protection for sensitive goods.
- Metallized film bag: MVTR of 0.01 to 0.10 g/m2/24h. Suitable for food applications, shorter-term industrial storage, and consumer goods.
- Solid aluminum foil laminate (MIL-PRF-131 compliant): MVTR below 0.002 g/m2/24h. This near-zero transmission rate is what the military specification requires for long-term storage of defense and aerospace components.
When a contract or specification calls out a maximum MVTR, that figure defines the minimum barrier performance the bag must achieve. For military and government applications, the applicable MIL-SPEC defines the test method and the acceptance threshold.

For metal components susceptible to rust or oxidation, a vapor barrier bag alone may not provide complete protection: blocking moisture vapor from the outside is important, but corrosion-inhibiting molecules from a VCI material inside the bag provide active protection for the metal surface. Military and Industrial Specifications for Vapor Barrier Bags
For defense contractors and industrial suppliers working under government contracts, MIL-PRF-131 vapor barrier bags are the standard material specification. MIL-PRF-131 requires a solid foil-laminate heat-sealable bag with MVTR below 0.002 g/m2/24h, grease resistance, and conformance to defined seal strength requirements under MIL-DTL-117.
MIL-PRF-22191 covers heavier-duty barrier materials that incorporate a textile reinforcing layer for applications requiring additional puncture and tear resistance, such as large or heavy defense components stored for extended periods.
Under MIL-STD-2073, Method 50 defines the complete barrier packaging system for defense applications. A Method 50 compliant package consists of:
- A heat-sealed MIL-PRF-131 or equivalent vapor barrier bag
- Desiccant packs (MIL-D-3464) placed inside the sealed bag to control residual internal humidity
- A humidity indicator card inside the bag to provide a visual humidity check at the point of opening
Together, these three components form the standard inner packaging system for moisture-sensitive military and aerospace parts. Each element reinforces the others: the bag blocks external vapor, the desiccant controls interior humidity, and the indicator card confirms that the system performed as intended.
How to Choose and Use a Vapor Barrier Bag
Work through the following variables to identify the right corrosion prevention bag or vapor barrier bag for your application:
- Barrier level required: Determine the MVTR your product can tolerate over its required storage or transit period. For military and long-term industrial applications, specify solid foil laminate achieving MVTR below 0.002 g/m2/24h. For shorter-duration or less critical applications, metallized film may be acceptable at lower cost.
- Product sensitivity: Is the primary risk moisture vapor, active corrosion on metal surfaces, or both? Moisture-sensitive electronics need a vapor barrier bag with desiccants. Bare metal parts need VCI materials inside the bag in addition to the barrier bag and desiccants.
- Storage or transit duration: Longer durations require higher-performance laminates and larger desiccant units. For multi-year defense storage applications, solid foil laminate with sufficient desiccant units for the enclosed volume is the minimum appropriate specification.
- Sealing method: All moisture vapor barrier bags must be heat sealed to achieve their rated MVTR. A bag that is folded, taped, or zip-closed does not constitute a vapor-tight closure. Ensure your heat sealer settings are validated for the specific laminate.
- Sizing: Size the bag so the product fits comfortably with room for desiccants, a humidity indicator card, and adequate material for a proper heat seal at the open end. Oversizing wastes material; undersizing forces the seal line too close to the product and risks seal failure.
