Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a static shield bag, a barrier bag, and a VCI bag for protecting electronic components?

A static-shield bag, barrier bag, and VCI bag each addresses a different electronics-packaging risk. A static-shield bag protects sensitive circuits from electrostatic discharge. A barrier bag is a broader category that can be engineered for moisture, grease, contamination, or ESD protection depending on the laminate. A VCI bag releases corrosion-inhibiting chemistry to protect exposed metal surfaces and connectors. Royco Packaging supplies all three, including MIL-PRF-81705 ESD materials, MIL-PRF-131 moisture barriers, VCI packaging, and industrial poly bags. For electronics exposed to more than one risk, Royco can help combine ESD shielding, moisture barrier, desiccant, or VCI protection in a coordinated package.

Which MIL-SPEC standards are relevant for packaging electronic components (e.g., MIL-PRF-81705)?

MIL-PRF-81705 is one of the key military specifications for packaging electrostatic-sensitive electronic components. It covers flexible ESD-protective barrier materials used for microcircuits, semiconductors, resistors, circuit boards, and similar items. Depending on the preservation requirement, electronics may also use MIL-PRF-131 for watervaporproof barrier protection, MIL-D-3464 desiccants for humidity control, MIL-DTL-117 for finished heat-sealable pouches, or ASTM-D5118 boxes for the exterior shipping container. Royco Packaging supplies these materials and can help interpret MIL-STD-2073 packaging requirements. The final selection should follow the contract or engineering requirement because different electronics programs may call for different combinations of ESD, moisture, and physical protection.

How do you protect PCBs and components from corrosion during storage or shipping?

Protecting PCBs and electronic components from corrosion usually requires controlling both humidity and contaminants. Royco Packaging can supply a low-permeability barrier bag, MIL-D-3464 desiccant, and humidity indicator to create a dry sealed environment. Where exposed metal contacts, connectors, or hardware are corrosion-sensitive, VCI materials may also be appropriate if they are compatible with the electronics and the governing specification. For ESD-sensitive boards, the barrier should also provide proper static shielding, such as MIL-PRF-81705 material. Royco's packaging specialists can help choose the correct combination based on storage duration, humidity exposure, metal content, electrostatic sensitivity, package volume, and any military or customer specification.

Does Royco offer desiccants specifically for moisture-sensitive electronics packaging?

Yes. Royco Packaging supplies MIL-D-3464 desiccants and other moisture-control products that can be used in sealed electronics packaging. Fractional-unit and small-unit packets are particularly useful for circuit boards, sensors, precision instruments, and modules with limited package volume, while larger units support bigger enclosures. For moisture-sensitive electronics, the desiccant is typically paired with an appropriate barrier material so outside water vapor does not overwhelm the package. A humidity indicator card may also be added for visual monitoring. Royco can help customers determine the correct desiccant size and pair it with MIL-PRF-81705 ESD material or MIL-PRF-131 barrier film depending on the required protection.

Can packaging be custom-sized for boards or modules with non-standard shapes?

Yes. Royco Packaging can custom-size barrier bags, ESD pouches, tubing, sheets, and related flexible materials for circuit boards or modules with non-standard shapes. In-house converting is useful when a standard bag would leave excessive headspace, create awkward folds, or fail to accommodate connectors, housings, or unusual board geometry. Royco can also help select the appropriate ESD, moisture-barrier, or VCI construction for the component and, where required, manufacture a military MIL-DTL-117 pouch configuration. Customers should provide board or module dimensions, required specification, quantity, storage and shipping conditions, and any moisture-control or labeling requirements so the packaging team can recommend a practical custom solution.
