- Outer layer (PET or nylon): Polyester or nylon film provides the structural surface of the bag. It resists punctures and abrasion and accepts printing for labels and branding.
- Middle barrier layer (aluminum foil or metallized film): This is the defining layer of any foil bag. Solid aluminum foil provides near-zero moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) and oxygen transmission rate (OTR), effectively sealing out air and humidity. Metallized film (a thin vacuum-deposited aluminum coating on polyester) provides good barrier performance at a lower cost and weight, but is not equivalent to solid foil for critical applications.
- Inner layer (polyethylene or polypropylene): The food-contact surface of the bag. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is most common and provides the heat-sealable interface. For food applications, this layer must be food-grade; for pharmaceutical applications, it must comply with the applicable regulatory standard.

Flat Foil Bags (Three-Side Seal)

- MIL-PRF-131: Solid foil-laminate heat-sealable barrier bags for long-term storage of military supplies and aerospace components. Requires near-zero MVTR and grease resistance.

These are the most frequent missteps buyers make when sourcing foil bags:
- Confusing metallized film with solid aluminum foil: Metallized film looks like foil but provides barrier performance one to two orders of magnitude lower. For critical moisture or oxygen protection, verify that the specification calls for solid aluminum foil laminate, not metallized film.
- Selecting the wrong inner layer for food or pharmaceutical contact: Not all polyethylene inner layers are food-grade or compliant with pharmaceutical regulations. Always confirm the inner layer material and request documentation from your supplier.
- Undersizing the bag: A bag that is too small forces the seal line close to the product, which compromises seal integrity. Allow adequate headspace for desiccant packs or humidity indicator cards if required, and size the bag for the packaged item's largest dimension with room to spare.
