Desi Pak® ECO — Natural Clay Desiccant in Plastic-Free Packaging

Keeping moisture out of sealed packages is one of the simplest ways to protect products during storage and shipping. Desi Pak® ECO offers an environmentally conscious way to do that without sacrificing performance. Made from natural bentonite clay and packaged in a plastic-free, bio-based paper sachet, it delivers reliable moisture control for industries ranging from food and pharmaceuticals to electronics and industrial manufacturing. As an authorized distributor of Clariant products, Royco Packaging supplies Desi Pak ECO in a range of sizes and can help you choose the right solution for your packaging needs.

What Is Desi Pak ECO?

Desi Pak ECO is a natural clay desiccant made by Clariant and sold by Royco Packaging. It keeps moisture out of sealed packages using bentonite clay instead of synthetic materials. The sachet it comes in is made from bio-based paper printed with water-based inks and glues.

No plastic shows up anywhere in the product or the packaging. It works just as well as silica gel in most settings, and in some conditions, it works even better. For companies trying to cut plastic waste and lower their carbon footprint, it offers a simple switch that makes a real difference.

How Bentonite Clay Desiccant Works

Bentonite clay pulls moisture from the air around it through a natural process called adsorption. Water molecules stick to the surface of the clay granules and stay there, locked away from the products inside the package.

The clay itself comes from the earth. It is mined from surface deposits, then dried, crushed into small granules, and sorted by size. No chemical reactions are needed to make it work. That is a key difference from silica gel, which goes through an energy-heavy manufacturing process to become usable.

Desi Pak ECO performs best at or below 30% relative humidity, which covers the conditions found inside almost all sealed packages. At those levels, it holds more moisture than the same weight of silica gel. And unlike silica gel, which can turn into a wet, gel-like mass as it fills with moisture, bentonite clay stays dry, solid, and free-flowing from start to finish. No mess. No texture change. Just quiet, steady protection.

Bentonite Clay vs. Silica Gel

Both materials do the same basic job, but they come from very different places and carry very different environmental footprints.

Silica gel is synthetic. Making it takes a lot of energy and releases a good amount of carbon. Bentonite clay is a natural mineral pulled from surface mines. After mining, it only needs drying, granulating, and grading before it is ready to use. That simpler path from ground to package shows up clearly in the numbers.

An independent Life Cycle Assessment, done under ISO 14040 and 14044 standards and checked by three outside experts, compared Desi Pak ECO to silica gel. The result: Desi Pak ECO has a 53% lower global warming impact. It also shows advantages in human health, ecosystem quality, and resource use. The study looked at the full picture, from raw material to finished sachet.

There is also a practical difference in how they behave. Silica gel can look wet and swollen as it absorbs moisture. Bentonite clay keeps its shape and stays dry to the touch the entire time. For anyone who opens a package and wants a clean, professional look, that matters.

Applications

Desi Pak ECO fits into a wide range of industries and packaging setups. It is safe enough for sensitive goods and tough enough for industrial use.

  • Food and Pet Food: The materials meet FDA rules under 21 CFR, so the sachets can sit right alongside dry foods without worry. Inks and glues are water-based and non-toxic.

  • Pharmaceuticals: A U.S. Pharmacopeia USP <670> compliant version of the clay is available when requested. The humidity indicator cards included in each order are cobalt-dichloride-free, so they comply with ECHA REACH directives.

  • Clothing and Textiles: Moisture during shipping can leave fabrics smelling musty or growing mildew. A small sachet keeps things fresh from warehouse to doorstep.

  • Tools, Hardware, and Electronics: Metal parts rust. Electronics corrode. Desi Pak ECO stops moisture before it causes damage inside sealed packaging.

  • Consumer Goods and Industrial Bulk: Any product that ships in a sealed bag, box, or container can benefit from added humidity control.

Compliance and Sustainability

The sustainability story behind Desi Pak ECO is built on facts, not claims.

Clariant awarded it the EcoTain label, given only to products with verified, standout environmental benefits. The Life Cycle Assessment behind that label meets strict ISO standards and was reviewed by independent experts. Beyond the 53% lower carbon footprint compared to silica gel, the assessment found similar advantages across human health, ecosystem quality, and resource consumption.

Every part of the packaging reflects the same thinking. The sachet uses bio-based paper. Inks and adhesives are water-based. The shipping cartons are recyclable and come from sustainably grown materials. Even the humidity indicator cards avoid cobalt dichloride, a chemical regulated under ECHA REACH directives.

Clariant also commits to restoring all bentonite mining sites to equal or better condition once extraction is done. The land does not stay scarred. That promise ties the whole product together, from the earth it comes from to the package it ships in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Desi Pak ECO really plastic-free?

Yes, all the way through. The sachet is made from bio-based paper with water-based inks and adhesives. The shipping cartons are recyclable. No plastic is used in the product or its packaging.

How is bentonite clay different from silica gel?

Bentonite clay is a natural mineral taken from surface mines. Silica gel is a synthetic material that needs an energy-heavy process to produce. Desi Pak ECO, made from bentonite clay, creates 53% less CO₂ per sachet than silica gel. It also stays dry and solid as it absorbs moisture, while silica gel can turn soft and wet-looking.

Is Desi Pak ECO safe to put in food packages?

Yes. It meets FDA requirements under 21 CFR for direct contact with food. The inks and glues used in the sachet are water-based and non-toxic.

What if I need the desiccant for pharmaceutical use?

A U.S. Pharmacopeia USP <670> compliant version of the clay is available upon request. The included humidity indicator cards are cobalt-dichloride-free and meet ECHA REACH standards.

How do I know which size to order?

The right size depends on your package volume, the material it is made from, and how much moisture you need to control. Royco Packaging has been distributing desiccants since 1980 and can help you pick the correct size. You can reach them by phone or email for guidance.
