Moisture Barrier Packaging

Moisture can become a serious packaging concern when products must remain protected through transportation, warehousing, or extended storage. Even limited exposure to humidity or condensation can affect sensitive materials, metal components, and other products over time. At Royco Packaging, we supply moisture barrier packaging designed for applications where controlling environmental exposure is an important part of product protection.

We work with businesses, government agencies, and industrial organizations that need packaging matched to specific requirements. Rather than treating moisture protection as a one-size-fits-all application, we consider the product, storage conditions, packaging process, transportation environment, and preservation period when discussing potential solutions.

About Our Moisture Barrier Packaging

Moisture barrier packaging is designed to create a protective layer between packaged contents and moisture in the surrounding environment. It can be particularly useful when products are sensitive to humidity, condensation, or prolonged environmental exposure.

At Royco Packaging, we offer several materials that can be incorporated into moisture protection systems. Barrier bags and roll stock can create an enclosure around the product, while desiccants can be used to manage moisture within the package. The appropriate combination depends on the characteristics of the product and the conditions it is expected to encounter.

Waterproof and watervaporproof are not the same thing. A waterproof barrier keeps out liquid water; a watervaporproof barrier also keeps out humidity. For military packaging, watervaporproof barrier material is specified under MIL-PRF-131, which limits water vapor transmission to 0.02 g/100 sq. in./24 hrs after flexing. Bags made from it are MIL-DTL-117 Class E, and the desiccant used inside the pack is specified under MIL-D-3464.

Packaging requirements can become more demanding when products are shipped across different climates or stored for extended periods. Temperature changes during transportation can create condensation, while warehouse conditions can expose packaging to varying levels of humidity. A thoughtfully selected moisture barrier system can address these factors as part of a broader preservation strategy.

Our experience with military packaging is particularly relevant to applications where environmental protection is tied to defined packaging requirements. We provide military packaging solutions that include barrier materials, desiccants, and other products used to preserve components during storage and transportation.

Moisture protection also matters in aerospace applications. Components can spend time in transit, warehouses, or controlled inventory environments before they are installed or used. Our aerospace packaging solutions address packaging requirements for products that need careful protection throughout their supply chain.

Industrial manufacturers face similar challenges. Components may move between production facilities, suppliers, distribution centers, and customers, creating multiple opportunities for environmental exposure. Our industrial packaging solutions are developed for a broad range of industrial packaging requirements.

Benefits of Our Moisture Barrier Packaging

Helps Limit Moisture Exposure

The primary purpose of moisture barrier packaging is to create a protective barrier between the product and the surrounding environment. This can be valuable when humidity or condensation could affect the condition of the packaged item.

Supports Product Preservation

Moisture protection can play an important role in maintaining product condition during storage. Barrier materials and appropriate moisture-control products can be incorporated into a preservation strategy based on the expected storage environment.

Useful for Long-Distance Transportation

Products may encounter different climates as they move through the supply chain. Moisture barrier packaging can provide an additional layer of protection when products are transported through environments with changing humidity and temperature.

Works With Desiccants

Barrier packaging and desiccants can serve complementary functions. The barrier material helps limit environmental exposure, while a desiccant can address moisture within the enclosed package. The appropriate combination depends on the application.

Why Choose Royco Packaging?

We understand that moisture protection is often one part of a larger packaging challenge. A product may need protection from humidity while also requiring corrosion prevention, physical protection, long-term preservation, or compliance with a specific military packaging requirement.

Our product range allows us to approach these needs from a broader perspective. We supply barrier bags, roll stock, desiccants, volatile corrosion inhibitors, wax wraps, and other specialized packaging materials. This means we can discuss how different packaging components may work together rather than focusing on a single product in isolation.

Our MIL-SPEC expertise is another important advantage. We provide MIL-DTL-117 custom bags, MIL-SPEC roll stock, and ASTM D5118 V3c/W5c boxes, along with other military packaging products. Customers working on specification-driven projects can speak with specialists who understand the importance of material selection and packaging requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What products benefit from moisture barrier packaging?

Sensitive components, metal parts, aerospace products, military equipment, industrial materials, and other products vulnerable to environmental exposure may benefit from an appropriately selected moisture barrier system.

Can desiccants be used with moisture barrier bags?

Yes. Desiccants can complement barrier packaging by addressing moisture within the enclosed package. The appropriate combination depends on the product, packaging configuration, and storage conditions.

Is moisture barrier packaging suitable for military applications?

Yes. Watervaporproof bags are the basis of MIL-STD-2073 Method 41 (watervaporproof bag, heat sealed) and Method 51 (watervaporproof bag with desiccant, heat sealed). Specific material and configuration requirements should be reviewed when a project involves a military specification.
